Foundum’s First Team Retreat

Tuesday, March 22nd, 2011

Last month our team came together for our first 2 day company retreat.

Since our team is spread over different countries we had the pleasure of meeting each other face to face and spending quality time together. It must be said that technology made huge leaps forward in facilitating remote collaboration but there is no real substitute to being in the same room with someone. It was a weekend full of hard work but also lots of fun and laughter.

We had the advantage of hosting the retreat in a beautiful and sunny location – Sitges a small town outside of Barcelona. The first day was a beautiful day with warm sunshine that left our “not just” developers Ladislav and Zdenko in t-shirts. In fact Zdenko came from the Czech Republic with a bathing suit, but maybe that was a little too much :-)

The aim of the retreat was to get the whole team aligned on the company’s vision and the next steps moving forward. We also did a powerful value exercise defining our 5 core team values that form the basis of our collaboration and will be elementary when employing new colleagues to our team. Those values are:

Passion: We are a passionate group of people at Foundum. We are passionate about the company, its vision and mission but also in general towards our lives and entrepreneurship. Being passionate is essential for a Start-Up to work hard and to bring the company to a new level.

Persistence: “I get knocked down, but I get up again” are the lyrics of a famous song. In a start-up uncertainty and ambiguity are always present. Ideas get created and destroyed, what we thought a few months ago might be a distant past in the business plan, yet we are persistent with our end goal no matter what it takes to accomplish it. Persistence is the column that gives a solid structure to a fragile idea becoming our future venture.

Pro-active: When an obstacle arises we create the solution, when someone asks for something we have already done it the day before.  Being an entrepreneur or part of an entrepreneurial team is all about taking a pro-active stance in ones life by creating solutions to problems.

Authentic: Being authentic to oneself and to others is the core of any trusted relationship. Understanding and then revealing the true person that someone is leaves no room for misinterpretation or deceit. Being authentic is a synonym of being happy with how one is and not being afraid of revealing it to the world – only by being authentic one can be a leader.

Team-Player: To do anything at Foundum and in any other start-up one must be a team player. Being a team player means so much and has so many other values attached to it, such as being respectful, caring and reliable. Together we achieve more!

Everyone in the team was very  happy with the outcome of the meeting during which we tackled many issues like the clear definition of our Roadmap, our Target-Group, Communication Guidelines and of many many many technical functionalities.

Working hard during the sessions and getting to know each other better during the breaks was the main theme of the retreat. The whole team left full of energy to bring the project live at the same time being satisfied and happy about all the team members, as there was a lot of synergy and connection amongst the people. Now we all know that Foundum is on a good track with PPPAT’s: Passionate, Persistent, Pro-active, and Authentic Team-players!

3DS – From Austin with Passion

Friday, March 11th, 2011

Passion for entrepreneurship seems to be the motivation behind 3 Day Startup (3DS). This is an initiative by a group of students in Austin (started in 2008) and it’s meant to foster the creation of technological companies in universities. 3DS is a pre-seed accelerator event that puts together students from different backgrounds, business, engineering, design and more, and gives them 3 days to come up with a start-up idea to present to a panel of judges made up of investors and local entrepreneurs. Throughout the 3 days there is very little time to rest as the teams discuss ideas, come up with business models, build prototypes and pitch to the panel.

There have been events organized in the USA and Germany and now also for the first time in Barcelona from the 1st till 3rd of April. Until now some of the names of successful companies that have emerged from the past events are Hurricane Party and Moodfish.  After 7 successful events there are now 14 companies that employ more than 40 people and have raised a total capital of $2 million. We definitely look forward to the outcome of the event here in Barcelona.

The 1st of April 40 students will get together at the La Salle Campus forming 8 teams of 5 participants each and discussing their ideas. Once each team decides on which direction to go they will start working together to create a business plan and prototype. Before pitching to the panel of entrepreneurs and investors two days later the 8 teams will vote on the top 2-5 ideas that will then be pitched to the panel.

This event is a great opportunity for many students to understand how to create a start-up, collaborate in a diverse team, understand what entrepreneurship is about and take action. 3DS delivers the framework and structure for motivated and talented people to come together where the only obstacle is time and where sleep is optional!
