Global Entrepreneurship Week 2012

Tuesday, November 20th, 2012

Global Entrepreneurship Week 2012 has come to an end! It is the world’s largest celebration of entrepreneurs, innovators and job creators who launch startups that bring ideas to life. These people drive economic growth and expand human welfare. There are thousands of events taking place all over the world. Most of them are free, covering a wide range of topics. Whether you are looking for advice on how to come up with an exceptional idea or how to get a lucrative exit deal.

In 2011 about 7,3 million people from about 123 countries gathered on 33.000 different events around the Global Entrepreneurship Week. Every November, GEW inspires people all over the world through local, national and global activities designed to help them explore their potential as entrepreneurs and innovators. From competitions to intimate networking events and workshops, this week is all about spreading the importance of entrepreneurship in society. Some of the most exciting events are “The World Series of Innovation” (New York), “The Global Student Entrepreneur Awards” (New York) and “Meet the Lions” (Namibia). Thousands of new startups are being created and millions of people are exploring their entrepreneurial potential. The participants can get in touch with potential collaborators, mentors & investors leading to new exciting opportunities.

The GEW initiative started in 2008, launched by former UK Prime Minister Gordon Brown and Carl Schramm, the president and CEO of the Ewing Marion Kauffman Foundation. It has expanded to 115 countries with more than 24.000 partner organizations (DECA, Endeavour, Entrepreneurs’ Organization ect.) planning more than 37.000 activities that directly engage more than 7 million people. With most new jobs in entrepreneurial economies originating from firms less than five years old, it is not surprising that the leaders of the world are looking to reinforce these efforts. Check out this youtube video on the Global Entrepreneurship Week:

GEW is about releasing new ideas and doing what it takes to bring them to life. It’s also about spotting opportunities, taking risks, solving problems, being creative, building connections and learning from both failure and success. It’s about thinking big & doing good by creating value that offers direct and indirect social benefits at the same time. Some inspiring quotes & golden rules of being an entrepreneur taken from Virgin’s blog “The first rule of being an entrepreneur is”:

“If something can’t be explained on the back of an envelope, it’s rubbish.”
Richard Branson

“Becoming an entrepreneur is a process – realize that you will have great days and frustrating days so remember to tap into your passion as the internal fuel to drive you forward and keep believing in yourself.”
Alissa Finerman

“Don’t be scared to fail. Within failure there is always a lesson. Look forward to failing as it shows that you are actually trying and you are learning through that process.”
Jamie Dunn

“If everything is under control, you’re not going fast enough”
Mario Andretti
