We also introduced a bunch of new features such as the Needs & Leads Matchmaking or our latest add-on the Resource Section with 1.000 hand-picked great Resources for entrepreneurs!

We look forward to an exciting 2013!

2013 is all about going international as we are launching new ecosystems in Germany, Italy, UK, Sweden, France & the US! The 2nd annual Foundum Unplugged will take place in spring 2013, gathering more than 200 high-growth entrepreneurs. We’ll keep you posted! We’ll also be implementing many new features such as a New Startup Profile, Special Offers, Mentor Profiles & much more. Keep in touch and we’ll update you with our newest features & highlights!

TechCrunch’s Mike Butcher Hosts Barcelona Meetup

Tuesday, December 18th, 2012

Last week, TechCrunch visited Barcelona for a mini meetup to celebrate Barcelona’s rising tech scene and give some local entrepreneur the opportunity to pitch their startups.  TechCrunch Europe writer Mike Butcher led the event that was hosted by Barcelona Activa. The event was also live streamed on the TechCrunch home page where thousands tuned in from around the world. It´s still available here in case you missed it.

The theme of the night was Barcelona’s advancing tech scene and kicked off with a panel discussion by a few of Barcelona’s successful entrepreneurs and professional investors and advisors.  The panel members included Philippe Gelis of Kantox, Mauricio Prieto of ODIGEO, Albert Armengol of Doctoralia, Eva Villaro of Tiendeo, Patrick de Zeeuw of StartupBootcamp, Marcel Rafart of Nauta Capital, and Farley Duvall of White Bull Summits. They discussed how the far the Barcelona ecosystem has advanced in the last 15 years, such as the paradigm shift from creating for the Spanish market only to a global focus.  However, they also pointed out some barriers that are putting limits on potential growth, such as restrictive visa policies and government red-tape preventing lean startup methods for creating a business in Spain.

Throughout the afternoon leading up the event, 15 Barcelona startups had the opportunity to pitch to investors and mentors behind closed doors and compete for a shot to pitch at the event.  In the end, only 8 were selected to give their best 3-minute pitch and compete to win 2 tickets to TechCrunch Disrupt in NYC next April.

The 8 startups selected to pitch were:  Cognicor, Dinube,, Knok, Lhings, Nutrino, Marfeel, and Smadex.  The panel, which included Farley Duvall of White Bull Summits. Mike Butcher of TechCrunch, and Patrick de Zeeuw of StartupBootcamp, followed each pitch with feedback and pointers to improve the performance.

“More important than ‘What you are building’ or ‘How you are going to build it’ is the question ‘Why?” says Patrick de Zeeuw, of Startup Bootcamp.  It’s vitally important to tell a story in your pitch, to connect with your audience and let them come to the conclusion that they need your idea to solve this problem.

In the end, Marfeel did the best job of executing this approach by expressing just how much is left out of our current tablet browsing experience and that they are the solution.

The event was followed by networking and free beers (provided by Mortiz, of course) at one of Barcelona’s newest hot spots, Ocaña’s in Plaza Real.

It’s clear by the support this event received that the Barcelona entrepreneurial ecosystem is heating up and shows no signs of slowing down.  Perhaps TechCrunch will be visiting more often.
