August 26th, 2014

Last week marked the conclusion of our summer excursion across the European Tech scene, with our Tech Champions series (More to come this fall!). Our last stop: Amsterdam, where it seems Wired got it right. It’s a buzzworthy place! technoridesAMST_0_1

Hosted by our friends at AccelerasiaTechChampions Amsterdam featured some of the region’s hottest startups. Presenting firms included:

Martijn Flus

Marcel Wassink

Pablo Javier Barni

Mick Niepoth

Wienke Giezeman

Dominik Blattner

Christiaan Solcer

Rob Hermans

Justin Campbell

We were very pleased with the quality of the crowd that showed up,” said Accelerasia’s Frank Bomers. “Floris van Alkemade mentioned it is difficult in the Netherlands to raise funding in the range of $1 million until $5 million. This looks like a global problem we hear from many entrepreneurs from many different countries, it was then also good to hear from Floris that Solid Ventures will come up with a new fund focusing on this specific ticket size. What was also great to hear is that one of AccelerAsia’s clients, Crowdynews, is in the middle of a fund raising round and got interest from some very reputable international investors to take part in this round to further fuel Crowdynews’ international growth. What was also interesting to see is that we met quite a few new cloud solutions coming from the Netherlands, an interesting space for which we see also a lot of growth potential in Southeast Asia. All together a good event with several noteworthy companies, made in Holland but with some very interesting growth potential in Southeast Asia and the rest of the world.

Will some of these firms be Bully Award winners? We look forward to seeing many of them in Barcelona for UnpluggedPathways 2014, and wish them all great success!

See you soon!

Hamburg – The hottest port for Startups!

July 23rd, 2014

After Munich and Berlin our TechChampions Roadshow with WhiteBull landed in the third German Startup City:

Hamburg – The hottest port for Startups!

Hosted by Buse Heberer Fromm, Haspa, and Betahaus, we had the chance to look at what’s new and exciting on the Tech scene in Hamburg, with presentations from 6 hot local startups:

  • Inviibe: Encouraging employees to participate in companies’ innovation – presented by Gordon Prox.
  • Pay with a Tweet: Earning money with Twitter – presented by Anna Abraham
  • My Local Scouts: The Airbnb for travel excursions, presented by Jessica Brockmann.
  • Hassleoff: A great App to organize private events presented by Tom Lesmana
  • Atalanda: One day delivery in your city – presented by Rene Baisch
  • Eyefactive: Touchscreen Usage for multiple users presented by Johannes Ryks

Further great panel members shared their perspective on the Hamburg ecosystem.

TechChampions Hamburg

The ecosystem has evolved

According to Christiane Strasse – who has been an entrepreneur for 15 years – the ecosystem has changed a lot. It’s much easier nowadays to set up a company. 15 years ago people looked at her strangely, assuming she couldn’t get a job, and so became an entrepreneur. Her first investor was the local bank Haspa, who helped entrepreneurs. Today Haspa has a 20-person department for Startups and “Deutsche Mittelstand companies” of which many entrepreneurs aren’t even aware.

Access to Funding

Access to money is one of the key frustrations for entrepreneurs. The founder of Veloyo shared his impression that there is not enough seed money in the city. Investors and entrepreneurs alike seem to lack vision in Hamburg. One reason might be that there are many family funded business with a different relationship to equity. People tend to be cautious, rather than dreaming big. Philipp Schroeder suggests that entrepreneurs should get recommendations before presenting their projects to a VC. Because VC’s are overloaded with business plans, there is only a short window to grab their attention. Try to stand out – ideally if a mutual friend recommends you at least your project will get more awareness.

Bernd Kundrun from Faktor 2 points out that these days he is able to close rounds much quicker than 3 years ago. This is also due to the fact that they have created a small network around business angels who tend to look at projects together and make mutual decisions. Thomas Promny, investor and entrepreneur, says that seed money from an investor perspective is a tough way to make money. Seed investing is not a lucrative business – not unlike in the US. There is just much more available due to the giant IPO’s of companies like Twitter or Facebook etc. Many employees who started with companies like this early on, have suddenly earned a fortune, which many have reinvested. In comparison, Hamburg has money but most of it is in the hands of older people who are afraid of new technology … Time to remove the doubt! ☺

Create Buzz

Philipp emphasizes, “Be out there and present yourself and show you’re there. Make sure people talk about you. Don’t stay in your small room and focus on your product only – talk about it!” If you create the right buzz around your company, the VC’s will be banging on your door. Make sure you have a team: develop your company and have a team so that you can do both: be out there and develop your startup at the same time.

The Legal Part

Forian Brem, partner at Buse, encourages entrepreneurs to get a lawyer early on. It may involve costs, but better to be safe from the start, to avoid trouble (and further expense) later on. At Buse they are aware of the challenges, and charge reasonable rates for entrepreneurs.

Successful Startups from Hamburg

So? Are there only small digital companies in Hamburg? No, in fact Hamburg has created great companies XING (the only real competitor to Linkedin); Goodgames; and many more. Of course there will always be a comparison to Berlin as the main startup Hub. But while there is much more buzz happening around Berlin, this doesn’t mean there are necessarily better startups.

Entrepreneurial Activities in Hamburg

More and more events are evolving around the Startup Scene like

Check our more upcoming activities here!

More and more institutions are paying attention to Hamburg. The new fund InnorampUp is also a sign that more money is being allocated to the digital sector in Hamburg.

We are looking forward to come back next year to see how the ecosystem has evolved..

Munich Makes its Mark!

July 13th, 2014

The European Commission Researchers may have gotten it right when they recently called Munich the “Best Tech Hub in Europe!” … At least that’s how it looked from where we were standing with WhiteBull at TechChampions 2014 – Munich!

There was no shortage of talent in a packed room at Wayra headquarters. Over 150 were there – from Entrepreneurs, to Investors, to some of Munich’s top supporters of Tech Innovation.

Munich TechChampions Farley

Markus C. MuellerBlackberry’s SVP Regional Managing Director Europe, and former CEO of Ubitexx (White Bull winner 2010) kicked things off with his tale of success … with some wise advice to startups in the room.

Special thanks to our sponsors Elance-oDesk, and Cartagena Capital, who announced the 9 presenting firms:

·         Solar Tower Technologies /
·         Testbirds /
·         Uniscon /
·         Little Postman /
·         Ysura /
·         Regiondo /
·         Trustyou  /
·         YOODOC /
·         Plixos /

Our panel on the Innovation scene in Munich and beyond featured Earlybird, Cartagena, Acton Capital, Target Partners, and Active Venture Partners. We talked about the recent survey placing Munich in the #1 spot for Tech. … The question of the night: Are ecosystems important, and do VCs care? The answer: Yes, they do care … but who should be responsible for creating them?

An intense few hours, and a great night was had by all. We left with renewed enthusiasm for the Entrepreneurial scene in Munich. See you next year!

May 2nd, 2014

The Energy was high last tuesday, as White Bull and Foundum kicked off TechChampions 2014, with partners Accelerasiahub:raum, and BDMI - in what some will argue is the Startup capital of Germany!

There was no shortage of talent on stage, with presenting firms Adspert, Ameroline, Cupenya,LinkoMyParfum, and Vamos. Our panel exploring the Innovation Landscape in Berlin featured (pictured above left to right) Julian Reidlbauer of GP Bullhound, Tobias Schirmer of BDMI, and Heiko Rauch of UFOstart. Another all-star cast of innovators, global corporates, investors, and industry players were there to listen, interact, and connect in an intimate setting.

The takeaway from us: A super vibrant startup ecosystem – one of the top 2 or 3 in Europe with a lot of upcoming entrepreneurial superstars. The challenge: The waiting list is long for the Exits and success stories to come out of Berlin. Stay tuned!

WhiteBull Foundum Berlin

“I wanted to thank you again for your invitation yesterday. It is the first time I attended one of these live events. … I’ll watch for other events like this in the future.”

“Your event was great fun. It was the perfect size, intimate and unlike some events where I’ve felt”overwhelmed.”

And finally, rumor has it that some of our resident bright stars may be taking to the big screen in an upcoming movie about entrepreneurship! … More on that later.

Foundum ‘shining’ fresh in Responsive Design

April 9th, 2014

We’re proud to announce that Foundum has switched to Responsive Design and finally  is available on mobile devices and tablets. Check out the Look and Feel on our newly designed Homepage.

So, what is Responsive Web Design? It’s what allows mobile devices to be compatible with a website, it allows for a graceful transition from desktop, to tablet and in turn smartphone. It is slowly stopping the irritating ‘zooming in’ on pages because the text is too small to read, and the frustrations when you hit every menu area but the one you want, because the menu buttons are too small. It is the next stage in web design, and luckily for those who missed the 2013 hype, this year will see responsive web design get bigger and better. (Alethea Snart – Contributor at Dupree Creative)

Responsive design is no longer just a feature or an option, but it has become a development standard. If you’re thinking about building a website make sure it’s responsive right from the beginning. Have a look at these links to learn more about the importance of responsive design.

Today’s innovative idea could turn out to be tomorrow’s next big thing. At NEXT14, the premier conference for the digital economy, taking place on 5-6 May in Berlin, start-ups from across Europe will have the opportunity to present their innovations live on stage at the Berlin Congress Center (bbc). The organisers of the conference are the digital agency Sinnerschrader and the dfv Media Group.

Applications for the international pitch commence today at and end on 26 March 2014. People can vote online to take their favourite applicants through to the next round. Voting takes place from 26 March and runs until 13 April. From the top candidates, the finalists will be selected by an expert jury composed of renowned entrepreneurs, venture capitalists and representatives from the media, among them Max Claussen (Earlybird) Philipp Möhring (AngelList), Matt Cooper (oDesk), Shira Abel (Hunter & Bard), Alex Farcet (Start-up Bootcamp), Ayelet Noff (Blonde 2.0) and Alex Hofmann (Gründerszene).

The finalists have the opportunity to put forward their visions and business models live at the NEXT Start-Up Pitch. „For us, taking part in the event was victory in itself,“ according to last year‘s winner Wolfgang Hafenscher of LineMetrics, after winning the Pitch in 2013. „We were impressed most of all by the highly qualified speakers. The feedback we received from them was very inspiring.“

Alongside considerable international attention, this year‘s winner will again take home an attractive prize package. Among the media partners at NEXT14 are HORIZONT (dfv Media Group), Wired UK, The Next Web, Venture Village, Gründerszene, rudebaguette and foundum.

In addition, NEXT Berlin is partnering with the Heureka start-up conference, which also takes place as part of Berlin Web Week. Two pre-finalists from the NEXT Start-Up Pitch will receive wild cards from the jury for Heureka’s Investor Speed Pitching event.

Participants should be in beta phase and should not have been in receipt of Series A funding yet. Applications are encouraged in particular from areas such as the Internet of Things/hardware, Big Data, new interfaces/wearables and money. However, start-ups from outside these areas may of course participate. The NEXT Berlin team is calling expressly on female entrepreneurs to take part in the Start-Up Pitch.

Thank you for attending Foundum Unplugged Mobile

March 3rd, 2014

Last week for the 1st time the event 4YFN was held during the Mobile World Congress and its been a huge success with more than 2.000 attendees. 4YFN’s mission is to be an event for all entrepreneurs at any stage of the entrepreneurial process. It was a much needed event to give a chance to entrepreneurs to benefit from all the movement around the Mobile World Congress that is still widely dominated by big corporates. Foundum was one of the  main event and content partners and we had the opportunity to host a Foundum Unplugged Event for the Mobile Ecosystem.

Foundum Unplugged Mobile Speed Dating

We had more than 200 mobile Startups applying for the Speed Dating Session eager to pitch their ideas to investors. It’s been a great quality of projects and in the end 50 Startups were selected. Cell Buddy, a virtual SIM Card Creator from Israel, Komoot, a new mobile App from Germany, Droiders a Google Glass Application Creator  from Spain – just to to mention a few.

Each Startup had the chance to meet 10 investors in 1 on 1 sessions. They had 10  minutes to pitch their ideas face to face. More than 45 investors attended the event  - great VC’s from abroad like Accel, ACTIVE, Balderton Capital, Horizons, Octopus Investments, Intel Capital, Orange Fab, Techstars – all together with more than 15 billion EUROS under management.

Good luck to all the startups for your follow up sessions and thanks a lot to the whole 4YFN and Mobile World Capital Team for partnering up with us. A special THANK YOU goes to Aleix Valls and Adria Battle for your trust and efforts!
